General Rules:
All Rules and Regulations as found on pages 54 – 60 will apply to all classes as necessary, in addition to any rules listed below.
Please use the Intent to Sell Form included in this book to list your entries and mail with proof of insurance, W-9 form, camping application, and any fees to the above address.

All Youth members must abide by all the rules set for this Youth Show and Sale by the Skowhegan Fair Youth Market Committee.
Youth members falsifying any information given to Skowhegan Fair Youth Market Committee will forfeit all sale money and show premiums.
Youth members must show and sell their own steer/market lamb/market hog/ Meat Birds /Turkeys, unless exempted by the Skowhegan Fair Youth Market Committee.
Youth Market kids must mail name and addresses of two buyers they have sent letters to so the fair can get them information about the sale
If Youth is chosen and agrees that year but then backs out of that commodity for that year, they will not be able to be in the lottery for the next two years.
All Resales will be at the end of the sale!
All Auction animals will be sold by the pound (Live Weight)
ENTRY:
Entries will be limited to one market steer entry and one market lamb entry and one market hog per youth one turkey and one cage of meat birds (Pen of 3)
Purebred market animals are not required, crossbreeds market animals will be accepted as well.
Each Youth Member will only be allowed to show in 2 commodities.
There will be two separate shows: sale show and fair show and no market animal will be able to show in another Fair show.
Steers: must be born on or before January 1st of the preceding year and in the possession of the Youth member by January 1st of the show year. Steers are limited to the first 10 entries to the Committee. Intents Must be in by January 1st if more than 10 there will be a lottery
Market Lambs: must be born and in the possession of the Youth member by June 1st of the current year. Lambs are limited to the first 10 entries to the Committee. Intents Must be in by January 1st, if more than 10 there will be a lottery
Market Hogs: must be farrowed after the last day of January and in the possession of the Youth member by June 1st of the current year. Market Hogs are limited to the first 10 entries to the Committee. Intents Must be in by January 1st, if more than 10 there will be a lottery
Poultry: All Meat birds will be 8 weeks old at time of sale and the turkeys will be 14-16 weeks old at time of sale. The committee will get all the birds and the youth member will be notified when and where to pick up their birds. Intents Must be in by January 1st, if more than 10 there will be a lottery
Tagging:
All animals must be tagged with RFID Tags. Submit Tag by February 15th for Steer and by June 30th for market lambs and Hogs.

Stalls/Pens/Cages:
Steers must be stalled no later than Sunday at 5:00 P.M.
Lambs must be penned no later than Sunday at 5:00 P.M.
Hogs must be penned no later than Sunday at 5:00 P.M.
All the Market Birds must be Cages no later than Sunday 5:00 P.M.
All market lambs and beef steers MUST remain in the barn/pen designated for auction animals except when taken directly to the wash rack and directly back to the barn. Any animals not kept within the designated barn and perimeter may be pulled from the show and/or sale and will forfeit all premium monies and /or sale monies.
Attire:
Appropriate attire Western attire is acceptable. Dark green, navy blue or black pants (belted), collared shirts (short or long sleeve) tucked in neatly and proper footwear is required for the show ring and the sale ring. No jeans allowed.
Eligibility:
Open to youth throughout the state of Maine between the ages of 6 and 19 as of January 1st of the current year. All youth are required to show their animal in the showmanship/fitting class or the animal is ineligible to be sold at the Skowhegan sale. Poultry Ages are 6-10 as of January 1st of that year and Beef steers/lambs/hogs Age 9-19 as of January 1st of that year
Weight:
All animals will be weighed in at a designated time.
Beef steers must weigh at least 850 pounds at the time of weigh in and market lambs must weigh at least 75 pounds at the time of weigh in and be in market ready condition at the time of weigh in market hogs must weigh between 200-300 lbs. Hogs over 300 lbs. that are deemed fit for sale will be maxed at 300 lb. weight.
Animals that do not meet these weight standards and determined not market ready must be removed from the market section of the barn immediately.
Watering and feeding:
No animal will be fed or watered during the 12 hours before weigh in and not until weigh in has been completed. NO animal will be fed or watered between 7:00 P.M. Sunday until 7:00 A.M. Monday. Animals will be weighed in at 7:00 A.M. Monday in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Skowhegan Fair Youth Market Committee.
Control:
All animals must be in control by the youth member in the ring. Any animal that appears unmanageable may be excluded from the show and sale at the discretion of the Skowhegan Fair Youth Market Committee.
Auction:
All animals will be auctioned at 6:30 P.M. All youth must sell their own animal in the auction. Exceptions will be addressed individually by the Livestock Committee. Market Hogs over 300 lbs., buyer does not pay for these pounds over 300. Example a 320 lb. hog will be sold and paid as 300 lbs.
Period of Show:
All Market animals must be in Market area by 5pm Sunday. All youth members are expected to care for their own animals and to be on the grounds from Sunday through the sale of their animal. Each youth member must sign up for time slots to be present and oversee the care of the sale animals and respond to questions of buyers during their time slots. Any exceptions will be requested through the youth market committee at least one week prior to the show and sale. Animals MUST be well fed, watered and kept clean in the stall at all times. NO substances can be used on the animals.
All Youth need to help decorate the youth market area after the meeting on Sunday
Halter:
A good lead halter of at least 1/2-inch rope must be left on the steer at the end of the sale.
Equipment:
Youth members should bring everything they need to properly care for their animal at the fair.
Reservation:
The Skowhegan Fair reserves the right to amend or add to these rules and regulation as in its judgment may be deemed advisable.
Unsuitable animals:
The Skowhegan Fair Livestock Committee, after inspection, will eliminate market animal from the competition and sale that do not meet the standard (weight and market ready) required for a quality show and sale. These animals must exhibit a potential for grade and yield regardless of weight. Any animal eliminated from the auction shall be removed from the market section of the youth barns.
Market Barn
Rules and Regulations
Youth members are responsible for keeping their animals, stall, aisle, tack areas and areas out in front and behind the barns clean.
If you are tending animals elsewhere on the grounds or showing animals in the show arena, remember you need to check on animals housed in the market barn at least once an hour.
Youth members are expected to do their own chores. Parents may need to help if you are in school, but IF you are on the grounds, the care of your animal is YOUR responsibility. Youth members are expected to groom, clip and prepare their animals for show.
There will be a meeting for all Youth members showing and selling animals on Sunday night in the Show Arena at 7:00 P.M. Youth will sign up for barn duty and then stay to decorate your area in the market barn.
All Youth members must be present and be ready to weigh in their market animal at 7:00 A.M. Monday morning.
Youth members must finish all chores by 7:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. daily unless notified otherwise. Chores include feed, water, cleaning both inside and outside the barn, and emptying wheelbarrows. If a problem arises and you cannot complete chores by these times, notify the barn superintendent immediately.
All youth members will need to report to Market Barn on Saturday August 19th at 9:00 am to clean stalls.
YOUTH MARKET SHOW & SALE
The Market Animals (Steers, Lambs, Hogs) will be divided into three weight classes: heavy, medium and light. They Poultry will be divided into two weight classes: heavy and light. Dividing weights will be announced prior to showing.
SHOWMANSHIP:
The showmanship class is a required class for all baby beef entries. Members will be scored on the way they show their animals and their attitude in the show ring.
They will also be scored on personal appearance and the fitting and condition of their animal.
The showmanship class will be divided into three age groups: Senior, Intermediate, and Junior.
Sale is Friday at 6:30 PM
Weighing in is Monday: 7:00 AM
