The Skowhegan State Fair Demolition Derby is recognized across Maine as one of the best “Smash ‘Em, Crash ‘Em” derby events around! Why are our derbies so popular? They’re planned, organized, and operated entirely in-house, giving us complete control to deliver the action-packed show fans have come to expect year after year.

This year, we’re bringing you THREE nights of Demolition Derby excitement! Mark your calendars now—or better yet, do what so many derby fans do and come to all three. With hard hits, fierce competition, and nonstop entertainment, you won’t want to miss a single night of the action!

Registration Fees

Pre-Registration Fee of $15.00 per car
(Entry must be IN and PAID by 5:00 pm at the fair office Thursday 8/13, Sunday 8/16 & Thursday 8/20)

LATE – Registration Fee of $50.00 per car
(Entries received and paid after PRE-Registrations – all late entries must be in and paid at the fair office by 5pm the day of the derby.)

Feature Prizes

1st place $1000 – plus a trophy
2nd place $ 600 – plus a trophy
3rd place $ 400 – plus a trophy

A trophy will be awarded to the Heat Winners (last 2 running cars) at the end of each heat.
PLUS the Heat Winners will move on to the Feature for a chance to win $1000.00! There will be 3 features, one for each derby night.

** Bonus Prize **

Drivers who have registered and competed in all three derbies will qualify for a chance to win the Bonus!
The Bonus will be awarded on Friday Aug. 21, 2026, to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place feature winner**.

1st in feature gets an additional $1000 to Total $2000
2nd in feature gets an additional $600 to Total $1200
3rd in feature gets an additional $400 to Total $800

**must compete in all three derbies to qualify for Bonus.

Demolition Derby Rules

DRIVER’S ENTRY

  1. Each driver must be preregistered.
  2. Drivers must be 18 years of age.
  3. All drivers must supply their own cars. Any driver changes must be approved by officials. Driver changes will not be allowed after heats.
  4. 40 cars only will be allowed in the derby on Friday, August 8, Monday, August 11 and Friday, August 15, 2025. Late registrants will be allowed only if space is available, subject to organizers’ discretion.
  5. Entries limited to 2 cars per driver.
  6. Any driver not obeying the rules will be disqualified along with their cars.
  7. All rules and regulations must be observed.

DERBY TRACK / PIT / GATE ENTRY

  1. Registration fee does not include gate admission — the driver and mechanic must pay gate admission.
  2. All cars must report to technical inspection before the start of the event. Top 5 cars from the final, are subject to post derby inspection. Only the driver and one mechanic for each car will be permitted in the tech area.
  3. No alcoholic beverages or illegal substances allowed in the pit area; drivers suspected to be under the influence will be disqualified along with their cars.
  4. Track operators or promoters reserve the right to approve or reject any and all entries.

DERBY CAR RULES

  1. Any stock hardtop automobile or station wagon is allowed. No trucks, jeeps, vans, hearses, school buses, AWD vehicles, etc. No alterations.
  2. Paint/Decoration:
  • Car numbers must be on both sides and roof.
  • Driver’s side door must be painted white or a different color than the rest of the car.
  • No obscenities painted on the car.

GAS TANK / BATTERY

  1. Maximum of 3 gallons of gasoline allowed.
  2. Gas tanks must be moved to the trunk if stock location is behind the rear axle.
  3. Tanks allowed in driver compartment only if covered with a separate metal cover.
  4. One stock car battery allowed.
  5. Matting or metal is required over battery and fuel tank; must be strapped and secured firmly.

FRAME / BODY / HOOD / BUMPERS

  1. Notching or cutting of rear frame is allowed. No modification of front crush box. Rotted frame repair may be allowed with preapproval from derby tech official
  2. No blocking frames or suspension.
  3. No reinforcements. Including A-frames, struts & shocks. Struts & shocks may be subject to post derby inspection, including cutting if necessary. No wire on k-frame to sub frame.
  4. Exceptions: Driver’s side door, including plate allowed inside drivers door.
  5. Wire allowed to one motor mount and one transmission mount.
  6. Trailer hitches must be removed.
  7. All doors must be welded, chained or wired shut. Weld and/or wire allowed in 2 spots below the window opening only. No weld or wire allowed on bottom of doors. Additional reinforcement allowed in drivers door.
  8. Use rope to keep hoods and trunk lids down — no welding/bolting/chaining.
  9. A 12″ x 15″ hole must be cut in the center of the hood.
  10. Remove all glass, chrome, and debris. Car and trunk must be cleaned out.
  11. Windshield is optional.
  12. Brakes must work.
  13. Front and rear bumpers must be equivalent to stock; replacements must match style/era. Bumpers may be welded to bumper brackets.
  14. No bumper covers front or rear.
  15. No roll cage or piping.
  16. No mirrors of any kind.
  17. All plastic must be removed.

TIRES

  1. Automative tires only (No skid steer or tractor tires). No studded tires allowed
  2. No double tires. Flapper tires allowed. Tubes allowed.
  3. Remove wheel weights.

SAFETY

  1. Seat belts and helmets required.
  2. Airbags must be disabled or removed.
  3. Fire extinguisher required in driver compartment, securely mounted within reach.

HEAT / FEATURE PARTICIPATION

  1. Drivers may maneuver forward or backward.
  2. No deliberate head-on collisions or ramming driver’s door — causes disqualification.
  3. Judges will set a time limit for hits.
  4. Failure to hit within time limit may cause disqualification — no “playing possum.”
  5. All car owners must remove cars from grounds after the derby.
  6. Additional safety rules may be imposed depending on track.
