The Skowhegan State Fair Association has presented more than 188 concurrent sessions of this great agricultural event. The focus has always been agriculture. The roots of agriculture extend back over 200 years to the Central Maine area.
From a time when agriculture was a way of life, to now, when it is a hobby for many and a source of curiosity for children, the Skowhegan State Fair has exhibited, held competitions and otherwise promoted, with the help of hundreds of exhibitors, agriculture.
Whether it is tractor pulling, horse pulling, the children’s barnyard or the very popular pig scramble, fair goers from 1 to 100 enjoy the events at the fair grounds each August.
Recent improvements to the grounds are the rebuilding of the Grandstand and Constitution Halls, both of which were both destroyed by an arsonist on March 30 of 1999. The tragic loss of these structures has brought about our new structures, which will anchor this Fair facility well into the 21st Century. Thanks to the many generous donors of the "Fair Time '99" Fundraiser Program." Also in '99 a new Horse Barn was added to the grounds. In 2001 a new Flower Building to replace the one lost in the grandstand fire in 1999 was built, in August of 2005 it was named the Donald Eames Building for his longtime dedication to the fair. New lighting installed in the coliseum in 2003. Also in 2003 a water fountain was set up in the park, funded by a Longaberger Basket fundraiser which has been located in the Flower Building for the past 4 years where fairgoers who have purchased the yearly Skowhegan State Fair Collectors basket can go to pick them up. In 2004 a second Horse Barn was built to replace the remaining old barns.
